In addition, since these actions and statements relate solely to your status as an employee of Kanawha County Schools and do not relate to matters of general public concern, they are not protected by the First Amendment of the United States Constitution

He wasn't even mean and nasty on the news. He said that he was turning a negative into a positive. Now I guess when you are an employee of kanawha county schools and not in a offical event. That they will still punish you for your actions including cooking hot dogs for charity. He wasn't on their time. I really hope that he sues, WINS BIG, and moves on to another state that pays more.

Just a ? though. That statement by the ron "locked in the closet" Duerring. That means that if you feel wronged by your employer you have no first amendment rights to speak out? That sounds kinda funny escpecially that the school is a goverment agency.

I agree to a point. But as I understand it, this was simply the straw that broke the camels back. Hell... you know how difficult it is to deal with school employees (especially teachers). Takes an act of Congress to do anything with them, even if say... they're sending cameras home so their students can take naked pictures of themselves. (remember THAT episode?)
So the current issue has a lot more to do than just selling hot dogs apparently.

Besides... If you were a private employer and the same thing happened, would you feel the same way? It's not nice to make fun of your "Boss"... no matter WHO it is. Do you have the right? Sure. But it also depends on how far you go WITH that right. I do know this: Had I pulled the same trick with 99% of my employers, I would have been fired on the spot. There's a big difference in what's legal... and what's right: I can legally drive around Florida St on the West Side at 2am with the top down... wearing gold and diamonds... but I'd be stupid to do it. It's exactly this reason that people don't do MANY of the things they can "legally" do.

Funny you would mention the camera episode. I had that teacher in JR high. 16 years ago and he was wierd then too.

I was saying I could understand this if he was out blasting the school board. But he seemed very level headed with the situation and said several times he was turning a negative into a positive. If he would have been name calling I would understand this a great deal more. I thought it was a decent lession for his students. If you believe your wronged you should speak up but not make an idoit of yourself. I don't have any idea of his past and you may very well be right about the straw. You have more info on the school board dealings than me. Did he make any statemtents about the board except that he was suspended and he was protesting it with a cookout? I don't see how he was making fun of Ron. At any job you would think you have the ability to say that I am suspended and don't agree.

Re: GW Vice Principal Suspended

In todays Gazette comes this response from Becky Jordan, and I cant blame her. No one REALLY knows what happened in this case, and yet the Press to this day tries to make Corbet out as some kind of victim.

Teacher was fired for more than hot dogs

Editor:

This letter is in response to The Charleston Gazette continually writing editorials on the suspension and then the firing of Pete Corbett, former assistant principal at George Washington High School.

Personnel issues have never been open to the media or the public in general. However, the Gazette continues to assume they know what has happened in this personnel situation, in part based upon Pete Corbett's statements, without having all the information. Editorials are written without full knowledge on the writer's part of all the aspects of the issue, which is fundamentally unfair to those being written about in editorials and is extremely unfair to the readers of The Charleston Gazette who are not afforded a full disclosure of facts.

Mr. Corbett was not fired simply for grilling hot dogs, as The Charleston Gazette has reported. Last spring, there was a closed hearing by an impartial hearing examiner. After all the evidence was submitted and sworn testimony was taken, a decision was issued by the hearing examiner as to what she recommended should occur with Mr. Corbett's employment based upon the evidence, which was followed by the Kanawha County Board of Education.

Citizens who read the editorial in the Gazette need to be aware and have the right to know that there is more to the story that cannot be told, because of personnel laws and procedures.

If Mr. Corbett consents and authorizes the disclosure of all evidence relied upon by the independent hearing examiner and ultimate decision of the hearing examiner, the Kanawha County Board of Education is more than willing to provide all information to The Charleston Gazette, so that the public has full disclosure of facts.

I would recommend that The Charleston Gazette contact Mr. Corbett to determine if he will consent and authorize the disclosure of all evidence relating to the decision regarding his employment.

Becky Jordon, president ... Kanawha County School Board

I'm glad she wrote that letter because if YOU knew what really happened, you wouldn't like it.

All of the teachers at GW know the real reason he was fired, if you know any teachers there ask them and they will tell you what he did and that they are glad he is gone. the hot dog thing was nothing compaired to what he got caught doing.
