CHARLESTON, W.Va.--Kanawha County officials will have to cut spending by about half a million dollars next year, including possibly cutting or curtailing some community programs and freezing employee pay for the second straight year, according to a grim new report outlining the county's finances.

"It's just bleak when you look at it," Commission President Kent Carper said.

The county commission received a report this week from accounting firm Brown, Edwards & Co., which was hired to review the county's budget reports for the past several years and to make recommendations about its current financial situation.

Carper called the report the most detailed and in-depth look at county finances he has seen in his 13 years with the commission.

Although he said he wasn't surprised by what the firm found, the picture still isn't pretty.

If the Commissioners step up and refuse to take salary that saves $83,160.00 right off the top

Not to throw fuel on the fire, but what is the need of three Assistant Directors at Yeager?

Getting rid of two of the three would save more than the $89, 000+ savings from the Commissioners salary.
And no, I don't care if they all are FOK(Friends of Kent) working at Yeager.

How about cutting the number of assistant superintendants at the school board?

Student population has dropped over the last 30 years, but the number of people working for the school board has increased.

Is there really a need for so many "assistants" in gubmit?

That is a great question ! But I guarantee you these are political appointed positions that enhanced peoples political "appointed" careers starting from Yeager airport Mgr. Rick Atkinson. Atkinson has lived a charmed life in city and county politics.Has never been elected to any public office but has been appointed time after time to Kanawha county positions by Kanawha county commissioner Kent Carper. Yes others have enjoyed the comforts of appointed positions with the county. But Atkinson wins first prize for being the political "appointed" boy for Carper.

By the way, the Kanawha county assessor has been at my door two times just last week. Yes, increase in county taxes..

Jerry you are correct about the vehicles. The county has bought employees who do not need a vehicle in the course of their duties a vehicle.

Jennifer Sayre (wife of former county employee Terry Sayre and Carper cronie) got a vehicle. The reasoning behind this was in case she was needed after hours she would have a vehicle.

This is insane. This is one example that cost more than $20,000 - now think about it - how many other Carper cronies got vehicles. And are they just parked at their homes (in case they are needed after hours) or are they being driven every day? I will bet every day.

Kent Carper has hired more friends and family to the county payroll - when are the voters of Kanawha County going to wake up and kick this man and his huge ego to the curb?

What do you mean former? Terry Sayre is one the three assistant directors at Yeager......... another king Kent appointment..

WAKE UP KANAWHA COUNTY

Maybe the County will find another 800+ thousand dollars to cover their shortfall..

I used to follow politics very closely. I always refused to get involved in county politics as I found them to be the most corrupt of any, bar none.
