THESE ARE RESPONSES TO THIS TOPIC FROM OUR OLD MESSAGE BOARD
utilized by homeless people to chat online at myspace or to play computer games.........
they need to just install showers and sleeping rooms too.
I was on the uper floors a few yrs ago in the childrens section with my kid and there was a hobo
sleeping on the sofa.
---------------------------------------------
Today I watched a guy looking at porn. (I placed that photo on the webpage). Why dont we just have an entire section for Hustler and Playboy in the library? ( oh yea I forgot... as long as the library has no control over the internet.... )
--------------------------------------------
a new library is the last friggin' thing we need......what an assinine thing to do...let's follow the money and see what the hell this is all about.....who the hell goes to the library any more, besides the homeless.....I read and research as much as anyone, and haven't been to a library in 15 yrs. .......libraries are like unions, having outlived their usefulness....
-------------------------------------------
It should be on Broad st......(closer to shelters )
no need for a lot of parking, most hobo's don't drive a car.
there is a computer with internet in every classroom, no need for an expensive library
the only reason to move it is to get it away from me and away from
Sen McCabe's office .....(right next door )
--------------------------------------------
The library is computerized now. You can check out books, either on line or via telephone and pick them up at the drive through window downtown. You don't have to go in at all. Don't need for parking. You can also have books sent to the branch nearest your home.
Some of the branches may need some expansion. Or, perhaps we need a new branch at Southridge. But another monstrosity downtown? Hardly. Or at least no one has yet shown me a need for it downtown.
What we are hearing is what some folks WANT, but no explanation of why it is actually needed. Don't ask me to pay for the whims of others. Got a legitimate need? Fine, let's talk.
-------------------------------------------
Jerry I listened to your program today and could not believe that someone was using the computers at the library for porn. Here are some questions to ponder:
Why weren't they removed from the premises? Are the, I don't know, the chaperones so to speak too lazy and apathetic to have them removed?
Also, What if someone's child went in there and saw that? It would be a lawsuit from the parents that could possibly cripple the library!!! It would also pe a PR nightmare.
I know a person who are good friends with the library director and I am going to tell him about this. I doubt that anything will be done but it is worth a shot. I am outraged and horrified about this. This is a result of pure laziness on part of the library staff.
-----------------------------------------------------
I agree. I think we are accustomed to not butt into people's business at the library (for instance, looking over a persons shoulder while that person is looking at a large reference book with maybe nude art photos etc ) because it's simply bad manners to do so. In this case, the screens are turned in such a way that anyone passing by.. or sitting near can see what that person is looking at. You cant help but to notice the "TV" screen as opposed to say... a book. There's a possibility that the employees are afraid of being called racists.. as a majority of the people looking (at least while I was there) were minorities.
I know what's most likely going to happen: At some point the computers will be placed in booths or cubicles so that young prying eyes cant see what the perverts are looking at. (God help us)
Anyway... I think that computers used for ANYTHING other than reference should be done away with, and that includes built-in card games. I'm not paying for a video arcade... I'm paying for a place of learning.... (at least I THOUGHT I was until now)
---------------------------------------------------
I went in this morning and saw all the computers being used.
one person was answering an email about a model train.....
All the rest were either card games or porn/ dateing sites.
They were a ruff looking crowd, mostly smelly, dirt ball looking white guys and a couple rough lookin' chics....only one black guy and he looked semi normal.
It was a shame to witness this, makes me think twice about letting
my kids come by themselves.
-------------------------------------------------
They claim that a porn filter is in place. But porn filters are a joke except for the worst porn sites. They dont stop the soft core porn (and often hard core porn) available at the thousands of "non porn websites" (like Myspace) and Youtube ) and others that display porn until the moderators remove it. Many businesses have a Firewall that blocks interactive websites like Myspace, but the ACLU would scream like a little girl about "rights" at the library.
If I were running the show, there would be someone to monitor the use of the computers as part of their job. And I'd have rules against people using these computers in the hope of talking to women (or men) on the net. There would be NO interaction allowed How would you feel if some woman or child were murdered by one of these thugs, after he had contacted them and sweet talked them on a taxpayer paid computer? Come to think of it, I'm not sure why we have the internet available in the libraries at all. We're paying our tax dollars for BOOKS and a place to keep them. Why are we providing the internet anyway?? The library isnt a Jobs Bank, or unemployment office, or anything else but a place of learning/reference. The library isnt there so you can send e-mail to your moma. It's not there so you can play cards, write women in hopes of a date, or look at porn.... or.... IS it?
------------------------------------------------------------
It isn't just the freaks who get affected by that stuff, either. Many of those porn sites dump viruses and trojans on the machine. You then get pop-ups of explicit photos that you wouldn't want your 10 year old to see, while doing research at the library.
Not to mention using any type of disk or thumb-drive to write papers for college or school, they get infected also.
I support a different library. Not necessarily the monster they are proposing.
-------------------------------------------------------------
And the heavy hitters wonder why we are last in EVERYTHING. Cause offering more cultural and educational tools to the community is a waste of tax dollars and only helps the homeless. We only need AM talk radio for enlightenment.

WALL-MART SUPERCENTER IN QUINCY: 194,000 SQUARE FEET = 3.5 MILLION DOLLARS
KANAWHA COUNTY PUBLIC LIBRARY: 149,000 SQUARE FEET = 50 MILLION DOLLARS
NOW... CAN ANYONE TELL ME WHAT'S WRONG WITH THIS PICTURE?
-------------------------------------------------------------
And now.. this from the Daily Mail:
Library or day care? ( Can you say LAWSUIT?)
Officials cope with horde of after-school students
Libraries are normally places where people can go to borrow a book, read the newspaper,
study or maybe even check their e-mail.
But there seems to be another function of the library. Some people view it as a sort
of day care center.
Both the Kanawha County Public Library and the South Charleston Public Library see
about 20 middle-school and elementary-school age kids come in each day after they are
dismissed from classes. They usually stay until about 5 when their parents are off work,
librarians say.
The practice could be a risky way for children to pass their after-school time, Jennifer
Soule, director at the South Charleston Public Library, said.
"They're here at their own risk because we do not have the staff or the responsibility
to care for them," she said.
Library staff keeps in mind that children have been confined to a desk all day. Library
workers try to be sympathetic to their sometimes rambunctious behavior.
"We do have some kids who come in after school, but they are not a problem. They are
pretty well-behaved. Every now and then they may get a little rowdy," said Terri McDougal,
head of children's services at Kanawha County Public Library. "I try to stress to my staff
that they may be a little rowdy because they have been in school all day."
To keep children occupied, both the Kanawha County Public Library and the South Charleston
Public Library try to occasionally have programs.
During finals week, the Kanawha County Public Library had a study break and through the
last week of school before winter break, it provided snacks for kids to eat and gingerbread
house materials.
Still, it would be much safer if children did not make the trip to the library unaccompanied,
library workers say. "Parents do that at their own risk," Soule said.
"It's kind of a risky business."
----------------------------------------------
Ok... there's the first warning. We're looking at a lawsuit waiting to happen, and guess who pays for it? That's right, YOU!
---------------------------------------------
Libraries were built for the purpose of gaining knowledge! NOT to play video games and certainly NOT to watch porn or contact children and women on the internet! Right now, there is a list of people (including photos) of sex offenders at most libraries where you cant see them. Why? Because children gather there and the staff has been instructed to keep an eye out for anyone on those lists. What can they do when they see them? Nothing. But if a child goes missing, they might be able to say "I saw so and so here that day". Anyway... stop the interaction on the net at the libraries.
