NITRO, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- A levy that covers the street lights and wages for some police officers and firefighters in the city of Nitro passed easily the second time around Saturday.
The $370,000 annual levy failed last year after 60% of the voters did not approve it. Saturday, 67% of the vote was in favor of the levy.
The levy accounts for 7% of the city budget. City leaders warned of layoffs and possible cuts in the hours of the city library if the levy did not pass Saturday.
In the unofficial vote total, 797 people voted in favor of the levy and 387 voted against it.
