my point is, sister mary said there would be NEW revenue (fee, tax) in earler posts of hers. and i believe this is a NEW "fee, tax", revenue for Nitro.

She was talikng about a raise in Muni fees, this is NOT that either. Those fees are charged to citizens. Had the levy not been passed they would have been raised.

Stony1, Freddy never listens.

All I know is that the newspaper called it a Municipal Fee/Emergency Services Fee or something like that. But, like I said, it is a NEW fee that we never had before or if Nitro did, it was eons ago.

But I am still waiting for the other shoe to drop - which is the Municipal Service Fee increase. Hope it doesn't, but I think it will.

Rusty said in part of his campaign speech that he would lower the fee. Fat chance!

No, the muni fee will not go down...you are right about that. I don't think it will go up either. I don't think they can raise it now after all the talk to get the levy passed without getting WAY too much egg on their faces. If they do the out cry WILL be huge! As to the emergency service fee...it was charged regularly until Karnes became Mayor....that is when the ball was dropped on it...and it wasn't that long ago. The Ashley administration charged the fee as did some before him. Karnes dropped it and Casto had not picked it back up...until now.

BTW, I did some checking and the money from that fee (when it was in place)...I am told...went into pensions. Perhaps the loss of it contributed in part to the pensions being behind in funding. It could be a good thing Mr Robb found the problem and corrected it.

stoney..I am not splitting hairs either. I have lived here for nearly 60 years and I know new fees when I see them. This is not one. When a fee is dropped for no apparent reason and then reintroduced because a competent person finally finds it, it is NOT new.

Freddy we charged no such fee during the Ashley administration. Nor did the Gibson administration before us. I have no idea what happened after I left in 1985.

And no such fee was ever deposited in the pension funds.

Mike I beg your pardon, I have paper work to prove that we did charge a fee when providing fire service to those outside Nitro. (specifically the donut hole plants) I worked in one of them and saw those bills. If I had a scanner I would show it to you. It is a copy of a bill from the city of Nitro to a plant for service to put out a fire. As to whether it went to pensions ...as I stated that was told to me by someone else and I cannot verify that. I will not argue the point any further when I can see the facts in front of me.

Now to give YOU credit, since there were probably not many fires, it is probable the fee was rarely billed. Perhaps you forgot or maybe even there WERE NO fires outside the city during your tenure.

SCFD Bear wrote:The City of South Charleston instituted this fee about 3 years ago and brings in about 8,000-10,000 per year. It is intended to defray costs. The Charleston Fire Department has been billing for at least 8 years and most of the volinteer fire departments bill also. As far as the doughnut hole goes, we have one in South Charleston that is called Country Club Village Apartments. If there is a need for the fire department they call the Davis Creek Volunteer Fire Department. It is not in the city limits, so therefore the South Charleston Fire Department will not respond.

I did not know this ( Country Club Village Apartments.) was not in SC city limits. I find this odd since the city incorporated the (2) houses, and street where Bob (take my picture) Anderson lives just a couple of years ago. I wonder where the boundy line is ?...Is the Cobb & Rogers Cemetary in the SC city limits ?

There was some contention awhile back about the Country Club Village Apartments.entrance gate. I understand that relatives had people buried at this cementary and was denied access to the cementary because of this gate, but I think there was some kind of compromise, because of the state law that you cannot block access to a cementary.

I might be mistaken, but it seems that I have heard (fire/police/air scanner ) SC police answer calls to Country Club Village Apartments before .

Interesting......I wonder...
