Old Union Carbide building

Postby TimeEnuf2 on Tue Jan 06, 2009 2:13 pm

I heard that Jan 24th will be the implosion of the old Carbide office building......

Has anyone heard about a specific time?

I thought that it would be interesting to see an implosion in person.

There has not been a date set as of yet. They have to relocate some fiber optic lines that run within 25' of the building. As soon as this takes place the University of Charleston will have a press release on the date and time. I can say that it will be on a Saturday morning around 8:00am, just don't know which Saturday yet.

Heres a question SCFD Bear.......

If I remember right, was there not a tunnel under route 60 from this particular building that was used by the carbide employees to catch the Capitol bus lines, that was going west bound on route 60. I do remember a nice enclosed brick building that was a bus stop just across the street from this Carbide building. And I do remember many Carbide employees boarding the bus at this location. But that was the day when people used public transportation..

If this tunnel still exists, and South Charleston city could lay claim to it,I would say it would probably make a good storage place for city equipment.

You might want to bring this to mayor Mullins attention at next meeting... I highly doubt that mayor Mullins has any knowledge about this tunnel...

The tunnel was also used to gain access to the plant from the parking lot as well as bldg 82.

The tunnel you are referring to was filled in when they tore the old bus stop down about 8 months ago.

The new date for the implosion of Building 82 is March 28, between 6:00 am and 10:00 am. The exact time will be known in a couple of weeks.

As spectacular that the implosion was, I am still trying to figure out the math of this event.

Building was given to UC by Dow..... and valued at over 5 million dollars.

The cost to renovate the building was to be around 10 million.

UC decides to spend well over a million dollars to have it leveled, in hopes of selling the vacant lot for around 3 million.

I just don't see that much commercial value in this property located across from a chemical plant.... granted Dow won't be there forever.... but still........ is this really a good investment for UC?

I hope that the powers to be at UC are smarter than me and see the upside to this deal........ I just don't get it.

Glad you asked! Was wondering about that as well. Who knows. The building was a gift. And it's not like it was close to the campus. But surely someone out there knows what is going on...
