GRAB YOUR ANKLES AND BEND OVER AS THE EDUCATION THUGS RAISE YOUR PROPERTY TAXES AGAIN!
CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- Pete Thaw, the Kanawha County school board member well-known for his penny-pinching attitude, says he's going to support a bond issue to build a second new elementary school on the West Side.
"I will blow everybody's mind, destroy my image and support" a bond, he said.
Thaw has been a supporter of the West Side school but has expressed skepticism over whether a bond issue is a good idea given current financial conditions. As recently as Sept. 23, he said, "Here the country is facing a grave financial crisis and people want to sell bonds. It's crazy."
But at the school board meeting on Wednesday night, Thaw agreed to support the bond after it became clear there was no way to raise enough money to build the school.
The theme that kept coming up during Wednesday night's meeting is how spread thin the school system is financially.
"There is no backup plan," said Superintendent Ron Duerring. "There is no money in the budget."
The board pressed Thaw into supporting the bond by stressing that voters might balk if the board appears fractured.
"I don't think we can go out to the public divided," said board member Bill Raglin.
Thaw's support for the bond ended a tense exchange among the board members.
"It's time, no matter what the stakes are, to get a new West Side school," said President Becky Jordon.
