Bear in my front yard

Postby Jerry on Fri Jun 27, 2008 11:47 pm

My neighbor across the street said she saw a bear in my front yard this morning. Great... first killer deer, and now this....

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- A bear was spotted near WSAZ studio in Charleston Friday morning.

Charleston Police and Animal Control came to the scene and made sure the bear got back into the woods safely.

The bear left our studio's parking lot and jumped into the Elk River. The bear swam across the Elk and then into the Kanawha River.

Once he got to the other side of the river, police say the bear went into a wooded area along MacCorkle Avenue and Oakwood Road.

Police directed traffic along MacCorkle Avenue to make sure the bear was safe.

I was meeting a friend for breakfast yesterday morning and could see blue lights flashing--LOTS of blue lights, flashing as I traveled down the Blvd. As I got nearer to Shoney's I clould see people lined up on the river bank. Of course, my first thought was a car went in the river or a jumper.

The small bear, probably young, had reached the bank along McCorkle Ave., climbed up to the top and was making its way on the road in the direction of So. Chas.

I heard later I came from Tenn. Ave. Was this the same bear in your yard or are we being invaded? This happened between 8 and 8:45 am.

So they can keep running around downtown. What happens when a mother and cub wander on to Lee St and some one gets in between them?

Our natural resources can only support so much wildlife and once it reaches a certain point they die a slow painful death do to disease and starvation not too mention automobiles

The very bear that Jerry is referring to had Two tags in his ears which means he has already been relocated twice. Guess what would have happened to him had they caught hm a 3rd time?

Some humans think that it is the wildlife invading OUR earth. Many of us think that there is a harmony that we have helped to unbalance.

Just for the record I do not feel that the wildlife is invading our earth. As a matter of fact I love our wildlife and have much respect for it as well as all outdoors. I believe we need to be responsible stewards of the land but I also believe we are OK to continue our hunting heritage. Believe me I am not one of these people who will kill any animal that walks in front of me and as a matter of fact I hold a hunting license in 4 different states and the actual killing of the animal is not what the hunt is all about for me.

Then why not shoot them with a camera, instead of a rifle?

I could shoot them with a camera from 100 yards away. That takes a good bit of the sport out of it for me. Besides I don't hunt with a rifle I hunt with a bow

Then don't snap the shot until you're ten yards away. Bringing down a buck with a bow doesn't impress me. Snap a pic from 30 feet of one sleeping, then I'll ooooh and ahhhh.

I never asked you to ooh and ahh and truthfuly I couldn't care less what you think. This argument is not going to go anywhere and I am sure it is not the reason Jerry started this thread. I am not going to comment on the subject anymore accept to say that maybve we should forfeit the millions of dollars that the state gets every year from the sale of hunting and fishing licences and see what happens to all of our state forests and campgrounds. Besides our state is so flush with money anyway so why do we need that.
