In much of the world, (including Estonia and most of the Scandinavian countries) it is customary to remove your shoes just inside the door.
(Reason number 34 of why I love to visit Estonia)
When I think about all the places we walk, and all the things we step-in without ever even knowing it... it makes me sick. Here's a short list:
Dog crap
Bird crap
People puke
Spit
Rotten food
And a host of other nasties that wash over the sidewalks, often times right out of peoples yards.
In other words... even if you CANT see all this on the street or sidewalk.. it's STILL there! So what is it about Americans that think nothing of allowing themselves and others to track all these disease causing pieces of crap into their homes? Especially those with CARPETS. (A carpet is nothing but a huge Kotex soaking up all the crap you drag-in from outside)
I normally attempt to remove my shoes when I visit a persons home, especially if they have carpeting. I do the same at home. It's funny... we're SO cleanliness conscience and yet we're no better than the animals we keep... (and allow THEM to go out and come in with crap all over their feet.).
Why is this? What makes us so filthy??
And don't pretend that the cleaning you do is the answer, because that's just denial for the most part..
