PETE THAW SAYS HE'LL SUPPORT SCHOOL BOND.

GRAB YOUR ANKLES AND BEND OVER AS THE EDUCATION THUGS RAISE YOUR PROPERTY TAXES AGAIN!

CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- Pete Thaw, the Kanawha County school board member well-known for his penny-pinching attitude, says he's going to support a bond issue to build a second new elementary school on the West Side.

"I will blow everybody's mind, destroy my image and support" a bond, he said.

Thaw has been a supporter of the West Side school but has expressed skepticism over whether a bond issue is a good idea given current financial conditions. As recently as Sept. 23, he said, "Here the country is facing a grave financial crisis and people want to sell bonds. It's crazy."

But at the school board meeting on Wednesday night, Thaw agreed to support the bond after it became clear there was no way to raise enough money to build the school.

The theme that kept coming up during Wednesday night's meeting is how spread thin the school system is financially.

"There is no backup plan," said Superintendent Ron Duerring. "There is no money in the budget."

The board pressed Thaw into supporting the bond by stressing that voters might balk if the board appears fractured.

"I don't think we can go out to the public divided," said board member Bill Raglin.

Thaw's support for the bond ended a tense exchange among the board members.

"It's time, no matter what the stakes are, to get a new West Side school," said President Becky Jordon.

No money for the school! Does Kanawha Co not get $190 million with I think only 27,000 kids. Where is the money going, new library, teacher raises, substitues, incentives, I mean that is a lot of money for such few kids.

And the best school in Kanawha Co. is private and thats where most rich people send their kids, Sacred Heart Grade School and Chas. Catholic.

I have to disagree wholeheartedly... My daughter, who attended Sacred Heart from kindergarten through 5th grade, has had much better educational opportunities at Horace Mann Middle School and at Capital High. In addition she gets exposed to the real world and not the "314" world.

and yet they voted to approve random drug testing.......at the cost of what per unnecessary test????

"If half the county's 3,200 employees were tested next year, it would cost more than $70,000, he said." HE being Pete Thaw.

All this does is grant permission for the people in charge to no longer have to think. That's what zero tolerance policies and "random" testing does - it grants absolution upon those in charge who may have to make a tough judgment call when there are intervening mitigating circumstances. God forbid they actually have to do something to earn their salaries.

While I disagree with random testing and I reallyreallyreally hope I don't have to pee in a cup, if I am told to - I will. Because I can't afford to be fired for refusing but I really wish that my family could afford for me to stand on my principles and refuse and be the first in the county to challenge this. But boy do I feel like a weenie..........

Many private companies have drug testing. I have NO problem with it and anyone who is not using shouldn't have one either. It will one day (and not so long from now)be commonplace.

NOW to the actual topic....I will not be in favor of any bond for the schools.
Why did Pete melt on this?

you're right I did kind of go off on a tangent there.

I too am surprised at Pete's about face but I guess there's a reason people should '"never say never"'. :)

Bonds and levies are the greatest lie of government. The let you vote on things government should do anyway, like build roads and schools, and waste the regular tax money on things you would not vote for in a million years.

When is the abortion levy? The welfare bond?

I think Pete is just tired. He is wanting the sheepal to stand up for themselves and say, NO! One lone vioce is not going to be able to do it. We the voters have to do it.

Trouble is will they vote NO or continue give money to the cause.
Sasha...it's OK. That kind of thing is HARD to accept. Just keep in mind they are looking for people LESS HONORABLE than you. :D It gets pretty personal when they want your PEE.. . This world is changing (not in a good way) and we are going to have to roll with some of the punches.

I am quite surprised at Pete, too.

I'm even more surprised that Freddie will vote NO on this school bond levy. Can Freddie explain that?

I simply do not want any more money out of my pocket!

I have told you repeatedly that my problem with voting NO to the levy in Nitro is that it will end up costing us more. I KNOW you are not dense, Sis. Why is that so hard to grasp?

So, Freddie. How is the school levy, if it passes, NOT going to be more out of your pocket?
