School Bus Safety

Postby Dmbro on Fri Mar 06, 2009 8:31 am

The first week of December of 2007 my coworker got a phone call which changed her life forever. Mine will not be the same either. Her screams "No, no not my baby" was forever etched in my mind. For the next 3 hours we waited with her for word from the hospital. She was trapped in Charleston not wanting to start traveling to Huntington for fear she would miss a phone call and she wasn't told to which hospital her granddaughter would be taken. It was a terrible accident in Lincoln county....completely 100% preventable. We have discussed the punishment previously on this board. However, now there is a bill in the legislature which will increase the fine for first offense of not stopping for a school bus, from--pay attention now!!!!!-- from $50.00 to $150.00 That is peanut when it comes to the safety of someone child. I'm not advocating locking all offenders away for the rest of their lives but $150.00 is not enough. I haven't read the complete bill but as far as what was reported on channel 3 news this morning, there is no distinction given of a different punishment if the first offense caused a death. I'm irate.

Is there any reason that a school bus can not pull over at a safe spot and let cars go by when they get 50 or 60 cars behind them as they pick up kids along the elk river?

every school morning , a bus goes almost house to house picking up kids...........if you are lucky, they kid may even be by the road waiting to ride the bus, if not you have to wait for the bus driver to stop, blow the horn and wait for the kid and mother to run from the house to the bus........

this sometimes put people 30 min late for a 30 min trip......yeah, I try to leave early but sometimes I get caught anyway

Is there anything Pete can say to explain why the bus driver can not pull over at wide spots and allow traffic to go by.
it might even be less tempting to pass a bus.
