Teacher runs for magistrate?

Postby Jerry on Wed Apr 16, 2008 11:38 am

How does one go about this?

Kanawha magistrate candidates focus on controlling jail costs

Robert Haddy, new magistrate candidates, said stiffer fines for crimes as opposed to jail time would be a favorable option.

Haddy, 33, is a teacher who heads the Capital High School film and television production department. He believes the magistrate system plays an important role in the community.

I saw in the daily rag that magistrates make $50,000 a year..considerably more than art teaching get-away drivers.

He may have the sad duty if elected of putting former co-workers in jail.

I don't know Mr. Haddy but, our Magistrate Court system needs an influx of new Magistrates.
Magistrates Yeager, Shelton, Moore, and Crouch have always done a fine job and I will again support them.

If you are referring to Janie Moore, she retired and is not runnning. I do not know Mr. Haddy either, but it is no secret that incumbent Magistrates are hard to un-seat. Actually, most of them do a pretty good job, but the Circuit Judges keep them on a fairly short leash. From what I have seen, Fouty needs to go, but she always gets more votes than any of them for some reason. I can't say I blame someone willing to leave teaching to run a court room. At least you have the authority to keep order and don't have to put up with parents.

It's a shame it doesn't involve the surveilence cameras. Otherwise one of my sons wouldn't have walked out of the school skipping 55 class periods.

So you are actually going to blame the school not having camera's as an excuse your son didn't go to class? This could not possibly be a parental issue??

When I drop him off at the front door and he walks out the back, it is the school's responsibility. They are responsible for him from the time he reaches the school till the time he gets home.

Well I guess I just knew better than to skip class. Otherwise my folks would have made me pay for it.

As did I, when I knew about it. However, 55 skipped class periods WITHOUT PARENTAL CONTACT! Nothing, no call no note.

So tell me, Oh wise one, how do I know he's not in school?

The first notification I had was a computer printout with a handwritten note mailed to my home three days before his graduation. And he was given an diploma -- the attendance rule was not enforced.

Hmmmm? How is that MY fault?

A more pro active position in communicating with your child's school may have helped. When my kids were still in school, I checked at least every two weeks to see how things were. I knew I could not depend totally on the school to let me know everything. I had two children to supervise...they had several hundred. It was MY responsibility to be sure my children were doing well. I even took vacation time and WENT to school with my son for two weeks, all day-every day, when he began to show signs of acting up. His problem was instantly solved since he didn't want me along for the ride... :) . We never had any further problems out of him.

For those who do not know WVEmp, there is probably not a more engaged parent hanging around here, so cut it out with the blame crap.

Point is, what possible excuse is there for the school to wait so long to notify a parent that there is a problem? If there is nothing in the kid's behaviorto indicate a problem, why would any of us know to inquire? And which school emplyee would you ask when there is no clue coming from anyone?

If parents or folks in general were issued crystal balls, we might be able to guess better when a problem was developing.

There was a funny episode on Roseanne on the WB where she threatened DJ she'd go to school with him for a week dressed up like a hillbilly/clown. Funny stuff!
