Why dont we take our filthy shoes off?

Postby Jerry on Sun Nov 11, 2007 7:45 pm

In much of the world, (including Estonia and most of the Scandinavian countries) it is customary to remove your shoes just inside the door.

(Reason number 34 of why I love to visit Estonia)

When I think about all the places we walk, and all the things we step-in without ever even knowing it... it makes me sick. Here's a short list:

Dog crap
Bird crap
People puke
Spit
Rotten food
And a host of other nasties that wash over the sidewalks, often times right out of peoples yards.

In other words... even if you CANT see all this on the street or sidewalk.. it's STILL there! So what is it about Americans that think nothing of allowing themselves and others to track all these disease causing pieces of crap into their homes? Especially those with CARPETS. (A carpet is nothing but a huge Kotex soaking up all the crap you drag-in from outside)

I normally attempt to remove my shoes when I visit a persons home, especially if they have carpeting. I do the same at home. It's funny... we're SO cleanliness conscience and yet we're no better than the animals we keep... (and allow THEM to go out and come in with crap all over their feet.).

Why is this? What makes us so filthy??

And don't pretend that the cleaning you do is the answer, because that's just denial for the most part..

I'd rather tolerate the small quantities of what you have described above rather than smell most people's stinky feet.

It's just a matter of what bothers you most.

In the countries I mentioned.. people wash their feet also. Something we might try more often. If you have bad foot odor, you need medical attention or to change your shoes.

Jerry is right... Hep C and some other nasty viruses can live for DAYS outside the body so you could be dragging in disease as well as just plain dirt.

Feet are a great health watching tool. They are usually a good picture of your overall health. Many doctors believe this whole heartedly. A lot of people find out they have diabetes by going to the doctor for foot probelms. Smelly feet can also indicate a fungal infection.

What a great topic.

My wife works at one of the local hospitals as an RN, and she is always very particular about where she takes her shoes and scrubs off that she had been wearing at work.
I also know someone that is in the their first year of nursing at WVSU, and if nothing else WVSU is at least trying to start their nurses off on the right track.... ie... requiring them to not to be seen outside of the hospital in their scrubs... requiring them to wear a lab coat when on the floor that the are working(and removing it before they leave the floor)..... to bad many of the main stream RN's out there don't follow the same suit......how many nurses have you run into in scrubs at resturants, the mall, or at the grocery store?

If ever there was a place to pick up stray germs and viruses, it would be at the hospital.

When I worked in the Hospital the Scrubs were only worn in the hospital. They were never to be worn outside of the OR unless a lab coat was worn. Under no circumatances were scrubs worn outside of the Hosp. There was a locker room for anyone that wore scrubs you had to shower throw your scrubs in a cart then take a shower before you could get dressed in your street clothes. If the scrubs were really contaminated they would throw them away. When they are worn everywhere by everyone they are spreading the germs from the hospital. Same thing with the shoes, in certain areas of the hospital booties were worn over your shoes because of all of the germs on the hospital floors.

I don't know if it was having five brothers or the muddy path to the outhouse but we always kicked off our shoes when we came in, and I still do.

I hear ya, was raised the same way. But then again, when I was a kid, any adult was alowed to punish me... o how the times they've changed.

Speaking of hospitals, it is also customary for everyone entering the hospitals to put on those little blue booties over your shoes, so you don't drag all that nasty stuff from outside in the hospital. They sell them at the coat check area.

If you don't wear them you can't enter a doctors office or enter most areas of the hospital unless you remove your shoes.

It's a policy I like a lot. Keeps the floors very clean.

A GREAT idea!

Too much common sense for the average American.
